Jerry D. Vavra, of Chelsea, passed away on March 28, 2013, at the Hospice of Mercy in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after a battle with prostate cancer. Funeral services were held April 3, 2013, at Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine, Iowa. Jerry requested cremation and a burial will occur at a later date with private services by Chelsea Methodist Church.
Jerry was brorn at his family's home in rural Chelsea and attended Salt Creek #9 School, and Chelsea Public Schools. Jerry lived in the family home for his entire life. He worked as a sandpit and sawmill operator for much of his life. Jerry never married.
He served in the United States Navy Reserve and was called up to active duty in February of 1962, serving until December of 1963.
He is survived by one brother, Virgil Vavra. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, George and Louise Vavra.
