Baseball bounces back with tourney win

North Tama drops a pair

The North Tama Redhawk baseball club was swept in a doubleheader at Story City May 28. 2A power Roland Story's pitching and defense proved to be the main factor in the contests. The Norsemen beat the Hawks 4-1 and 3-0 to improve their record to 4-1. Sophomore Brody Hulme pitched the first game, taking a 1-1 tie into the bottom of the sixth before surrendering four runs on three hits and a bean ball. Blocker came into relief for the final out but gave up three free passes. Veterans Dalton Hulme and Jacob Wrage each had a single and a double off Roland Story's ace. Hulme drove in Wrage for the only run of the night. Huston Danker ripped two singles and Brent Billerbeck added a base hit. Clayton Blocker drew a pair of walks and laid down a sacrafice bunt. The Redhawks were held to just three hits in the nightcap. Dalton Hulme had a pair of singles and Wrage slapped another. Eighth grader Cameron Hoeg took the hill pitching five innings. Hoeg allowed three runs on six hits and five free passes, while striking out four batters. The North Tama defense committed only one error on the night. The Redhawks drop to 4-2 on the season.

Kubik-Finch Post Champions

The North Tama baseball team won the Kubik-Finch Post Tournament on Saturday, June 1. The Redhawk baseball team was proud to win the Kubik-Finch Post Tournament, especially for the support the Legion gives to the Redhawk baseball team. The Redhawks defeated North Linn for the second time this season, in the first round of competition. The Redhawks won 11-3. The game was tied 2-2 until the Redhawks scored four in the fourth and three more in the fifth to pull away from North Linn. Dalton Hulme was the winning pitcher, throwing 5 2/3 innings. Hulme allowed two earned runs on four hits, while striking out seven. Cameron Hoeg came into the contest and threw the remainder of the game. Hoeg struck out three batters and allowed a walk and a single. Leadoff hitter Brent Billerbeck and Cade Stuart went three for three at the plate. Dalton Hulme was three for five, driving in two runs. Jacob Wrage hit a single and a double knocking in three runs. Brody Hulme and Huston Danker each added a single and a RBI. Third baseman Brandon Kaufman made a fantastic play to help keep North Linn scoreless in the first inning.

In the championship game, the Redhawks defeated a tough Iowa Valley team 10-6. Iowa Valley has one of the best hitting clubs in Class A. The Redhawks sent Brody Hulme to the mound. Iowa Valley roughed up Hulme a bit, but Hulme managed to hang on to a complete game victory. Hulme scattered nine hits and walked just one batter, while striking out four to earn his second victory on the hill. The Hawks were errorless in the game making several tough plays from the field. Short Stop Brent Billerbeck and second baseman Clayton Blocker made several nice plays in the game to help the winning cause. Dalton Hulme continued to swing the big stick smacking five of the ten Redhawk runs across home plate. Hulme hit two singles and a double. Jacob Wrage hit a single and a double off the centerfield fence to drive in two runs. Brody Hulme and Brent Billerbeck each added a single. Clayton Blocker scored twice drawing three walks.

The Redhawks improve to 6-2 on the season after the two quality wins. Dalton Hulme, Jacob Wrage, Brent Billerbeck and Caden Stuart were selected to the all-tournament team.
