Donald Arthur Lenth was born July 13, 1920 in Battle Creek, Iowa: the son of Martin and Mabel (Fixen) Lenth. He attended Battle Creek Public School, Iowa State Teachers College and then Drake University. Don served in the United States Army during World War II. He was united in marriage to Joyce Silver on December 26, 1941 in South Sioux City, Nebraska; she preceded him in death on March 4, 2007. Don and Joyce made their home in Lake View for a time, before moving to Anita, Iowa for two years where he was a teacher and coach. In 1948, they became members of the Traer community where Don worked for North Tama County Community Schools as the superintendent. He spent 42 years as a teacher, coach and superintendent, retiring in 1982. Don was a member of the American Legion, past president of the UNI Alumni Association, received the UNI Service Award in 1968 and the Iowa High School Athletic Association Service Award in 1989.
Don passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2013 at the Sunrise Hill Care Center at the age of 93. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Joyce; an infant daughter Linda Lenth and a brother Robert Lenth. Don is survived by a son Thomas Lenth of San Diego; 2 daughters: Pamela Ohrt of Des Moines and Lu (Ben) Roth of Earlham; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and a sister Ethel Stamp of Holstein.
