North Tama 8th grade students have been working on an annual project to honor our local veterans. For the past three years North Tama 8th grade students have written Thank You letters to our local veterans as part of a project in Language Arts and History. This project has been a great opportunity for 8th grade students to learn valuable real life skills as well as earn a better appreciation for our local service men and women. While the tasks of learning to properly compose a letter and address an envelope seem simple, the learning goes far beyond the classroom. Students learn the history of Veterans Day and plan a program to honor our local veterans. Students are also able to learn about the service of many of our local veterans because many veterans respond to the letters they receive, almost creating a "pen pal" for the students. Students look forward to checking the mail every day and can not wait to hear if they received a response from someone they wrote to.
This year local veterans are invited to attend the 3rd Annual Veterans Day Program on November 11th at 11:30 in the North Tama Gymnasium. The program will be followed by a luncheon for veterans. The 8th grade students will continue their real life learning by serving the veterans lunch and then joining the veterans to dine and converse.
If you are a veteran and would like to join us for the program and luncheon please respond to Allison Freitag & the North Tama 8th Graders through one of the following methods by Wednesday, November 6th: Call (319) 478-2265 extension 138 or (515) 681-8533.Email: afreitag@ n-tama.k12.ia.us
