Senior Lucas Hefty has been named to the Beyond Sports College Network's (BSN) 2014 Preseason All America Team. Hefty, a tight end for the Peacocks, was tabbed as a first teamer.
Hefty teamed up with graduated linebacker Ethan Douglas and Smith on the NSIC South Division First Team and the Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-Super Region #3 squad following the 2013 season. Smith picked up first team honors on the all-super region list, while Hefty and Douglas were named third-team performers.
In 2014, Hefty caught 65 passes for 846 yards (51st in NCAA) and 10 touchdowns (33rd NCAA) as UIU's starting tight end. In addition, to Hefty's pass catching duties, he was also a big part of the blocking schemes for Smith's success on the ground. His touchdown catches, receiving yards, 5.9 catches per game (49th NCAA) and 76.9 receiving yards per game (59th NCAA) all ranked fourth among Northern Sun Conference receivers. Hefty also added three two-point conversions to his scoring total this season averaging 6 points per game. In his three years with UIU, the Traer, Iowa native has pulled in 113 passes for 1,476 yards and 19 touchdowns.
"Lucas has worked extremely hard to get where he is today," said UIU Head Football Coach Tom Shea. "He has increased his strength and speed and developed his skill set each year and has become a special player who can do so much in our offense. His yards after the catch are probably the biggest addition to our offense when he turns a quick pass into a first down or more breaking tackles. Lucas is a tremendous team player and he is well respected by his teammates and the fans here at Upper Iowa."
