Charles Alcorn, 98

Charles Alcorn of Cottage Grove, Oregon died July 26, 2015 at the age of 98. A joint memorial service for Charles and his wife Mary will be held Saturday, August 29th at 10:30 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Traer with the Rev. Brice Hoyt officiating.

Charles Alcorn was born April 7, 1917 at his family's home at the Arch, Horn Head, Dunfanaghy in County Donegal, Ireland, the son of Robert and Martha (Montgomery) Alcorn. He emigrated to the United States in 1948. He settled in the Traer area doing farm work for various people. He met Mary Neal in 1955 while on a tour of the Shakespeare Country. They were married on February 22, 1958 in Kalamazoo, Michigan and made their home on a farm between Reinbeck and Traer. Over the years he farmed and worked in construction.

He was active in the church, a member of Hesperia Masonic Lodge # 340 AF & AM and Bona Dea Chapter # 375 Order of Eastern Star. Many remember him for giving the Irish Blessing as the benediction at the conclusion of meetings for Rainbow Girls.

Charles and Mary moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1993 to be close to their daughter . They welcomed their first grandchild in January of 1995 and provided childcare for their grandson. They moved to Creswell in 1998 to be closer and provide childcare for their granddaughter. They moved to an apartment in assisted living at Magnolia Gardens in November of 2009 where they made many friends among the other residents and staff.

Charles is survived by his daughter, Dawn Alcorn Champoux, and grandchildren Sean Charles and Kaitlyn Mary Champoux of Eugene, Oregon, and many nieces and nephews. *
