Mary Martha (Neal) Alcorn, 91

Mary Martha (Neal) Alcorn of Cottage Grove, Oregon died November 15, 2014 at the age of 91. A joint memorial service for Mary and her husband Charles will be held Saturday, August 29th at 10:30 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Traer with The Rev. Brice Hoyt officiating.

Mary Martha (Neal) Alcorn was born September 6, 1923 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Thomas and Dawn (Short) Neal. She graduated from Kalamazoo High School and received a war time degree from Purdue University. She worked for the Upjohn Company and Michigan Bell for several years. In 1955 she met Charles Alcorn on a tour of the Shakespeare Country. They were married on February 22, 1958 in Kalamazoo, Michigan and made their home on a farm between Reinbeck and Traer.

During the early years of their marriage, Mary was a housewife and then a mother. She went to work for the Reinbeck Courier and later for US West in Waterloo and then Des Moines.

She was involved in the church and the Bona Dea Chapter #375 of the Order of the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron and as a Grand Representative. She was also active in the Reinbeck International Order of the Rainbow for Girls.

She and her husband moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1993, to be close to their daughter and her family providing childcare for their grandson. In 1998 following the birth of their granddaughter, they moved to Creswell, Oregon to be closer (next door) and provide childcare for her as well. In November of 2009 they moved into an apartment at Magnolia Gardens Assisted Living where she enjoyed socializing with the friends they made in their new community.

She was survived by her husband, Charles Alcorn of Cottage Grove, Oregon; daughter Dawn Alcorn Champoux, and grandchildren Sean Charles and Kaitlyn Mary Champoux of Eugene, Oregon; a sister, Betty Bloom of Texas. *
