The Dengler Domain: Music Battle Royale 6 (Summertime)

April 29, 2016
Sean Dengler - Columnist , Traer Star-Clipper

The birds are chirping, the grass is green, and happiness is all around. Summer is quickly approaching which is also my favorite time of the year. Warmer weather and longer daylight makes everything better. Wait a minute, I can hear music in the distance. With each second, it is becoming louder. Now it is here which means one thing. Time for another Music Battle Royale: Summertime Song Edition! In this first corner, Pure Prairie League's "Amie" and in the second corner, the Allman Brothers Band's "Midnight Rider."

I enjoy the nice, light tune of "Amie." Listening to this song is a lot of fun. I thought I had never heard of this song before I listened to it, but as it progressed, I started remembering it. The lead singer does not hit the highest notes or lowest notes, but he has strong command of his vocal range. He has a light, easy listening voice. Pure Prairie League is a large ensemble, and this lacks in today's popular music. Everyone's individual part makes "Amie" great, and the chemistry of this band makes the song special.

The song is catchy and matches well with the easy flow of summertime. I love the beautiful acoustic guitar riff in the middle of the song. During this riff, the singing part feels inconsequential. "Amie" is a toe tapping, finger snapping song. The song has a youthful, happiness vibe which turns any frown upside down. The poetic ending beautifully wraps the song up. "Amie" is a magnificent song.

"Midnight Rider" is a beautiful Allman Brothers Band's piece. The easy flowing rhythm makes anyone want to swing their hips. The distinct sounds of the singers' voices and guitars perfectly blend together. With all the singers collaborating together on the chorus, it is awe-inspiring. The way they hold their notes provides the song a special essence. Within the first minute and thirty seconds, an impressive guitar solo takes place. I could only wish today's music had beautiful guitar solos like this one. The amps sounded flooded with the guitars in a creative way, and this adds to the songs uniqueness. This song is also a toe tapping, grooving song. Nothing would feel better than hearing this song late at night on the backroads.

This is the end and the final determination. Both songs are great and need to be appreciated. Only one song claims the Music Battle Royale: Summertime Song Edition belt! That song is "Midnight Rider." While a close race, no other band can replicate the sound of this song. Pure Prairie League's "Amie" would be easier to replicate, but no one has a chance with this Allman Brothers Band tune. This is the end of another edition of the Music Battle Royale. Set down the newspaper and go outside. Enjoy the beautiful weather with these amazing tunes playing in the background. It will be a phenomenal time.
