Janet (Jan) Ruth Wisdom, 82, of Sun City Center, FL passed away on April 15, 2016 following a long illness. Jan is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert (Captain, U.S. Navy retired) of Sun City Center and nieces Laura Abbott of Savannah, GA; Mary Luterek of Waterloo, IA; and Carol Buxton of Carroll, IA; nephew Larry Risvold of Elgin, SC. She was preceded in death by her parents Carl Bernard and E. Lucile Risvold and her brother, Harry Risvold.

Jan was born on February 28, 1934 in Sioux Rapids, IA and grew up in the very small town of Traer, IA. She attended public schools there and was very active in music, drama classes and productions. She attended Drake University in Des Moines, IA and graduated in 1956 with a BA degree in English and Fine Arts. She was an accomplished musician on piano, organ and the clarinet, and was in the Drake Marching Band. She appeared in and starred in many theater productions while a student at Drake. She was also very active in the Chi Omega Social Sorority.

Following graduation from Drake University in 1956, she met and married Robert Wisdom, a career Naval Aviator. During Robert's service to our Nation, she was a dedicated wife and lent great support to his successful career over the many years of his military service. Together they were stationed throughout the United States.

Jan was socially active and was deeply involved in the Catholic Church and charitable organizations for over 60 years. She formed her fondness for volunteer work beginning with the Navy/Marine Corp League and she continued serving poor Parishes using her talent on the organ. She also served as a Lector in several Parishes. After her husband's retirement they settled in St. Petersburg, FL where she chaired the Alter Guild at St. Peters Cathedral and authored The Handbook for Alter Guild Servers. She continued her volunteer activities with "Rach to Recovery" where she visited over 500 women immediately after they had Breast Cancer surgery.

Jan will always be remembered as a friendly and compassionate person. After a move to Weeki Wachee, FL she enjoyed playing golf as a member of GlenLakes Country Club but also continued her volunteer work spending many hours as a dedicated volunteer and supervisor at "The Day Star Hope Center" of Springhill, FL where they served the poor and homeless of Hernando County and beyond.

She was an active member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 64 years, an International Philanthropic and Educational organization that councils women and raises funds to support their continuing education through loans, grants and personal encouragement to succeed. Jan was a co-founder of P.E.O. Chapter HR in Weeki Wachee, FL.

A Funeral Mass will be held at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Sun City Center, FL on May 3, 2016. A reception will be held following the Mass. Internment will be at Sarasota National Cemetery at a later date.
