June 17, 2016
Steve Sodders - IA State Senator , Traer Star-Clipper

Iowans and out-of-state visitors looking for interesting things to do this summer have lots of choices.

One way to discover places to explore locally and throughout the state is to use the Iowa Culture App. You'll find more than 3,500 arts, history and culture, and science and nature destinations in all 99 counties. The interactive map and app are available at www.dcaapp.com.

A few things to check out in our area include:

* Matthew Edel Blacksmith Shop, Haverhill - One of Iowa's eight historic sites, this uniquely preserved shop is on the National Register of Historic Places. It houses Matthew Edel's wares and stories about blacksmithing. Edel, a skilled blacksmith and inventor, opened his shop in 1883 and repaired implements and shoed horses with tools he created and patented before his death, in 1940. www.iowaculture.gov/history/sites/matthew-edel-blacksmith-shop.

* Otter Creek Lake, Park and Nature Center, Toledo This beautiful park features a 65-acre lake and nature center with a riparian diorama. www.tamacounty.org/naturecenter.html

* Fisher Community Center: Art Gallery and Sculptures, Marshalltown - Holds an outstanding collection of original paintings by Impressionist and post-Impression artists, such as Mary Cassatt, Alfred Sisley, and Edgar Degas. There is also an extensive collection of sculptures and ceramic pieces from various artists from around the world. www.theartcentermarshalltown.org

* Dysart Historical Center, Dysart - Features a complex of three buildings: A historical museum, a one-room rural school, and a new agricultural museum and interpretive center. Experience the displays, narratives and programs designed to share the inspiring stories of Iowa's rich agricultural heritage and culture. dysartiowa.com/Museum.htm
