Holiday Happenings this weekend

December 2, 2016
Traer Star-Clipper

Traer Chamber of Commerce invites you to celebrate Holiday Happenings this weekend with lots of special events going on in Traer.

Of special note this year, the Chamber is celebrating a special anniversary, the 25th year of Lighting Up Taylor Park. At the annual Chamber dinner 25 years ago, it was suggested that the Chamber could use the extensive collection of lighted lawn ornaments belonging to Roger and Jane Knoop, to showcase beautiful Taylor Park located along Highway 63, for the holiday season. The extensive collection of Ernie and Lil Podhajsky was also added, and over the years, new items have been added as old ones wore out. Monetary donations from the Chamber, individual people and businesses, and organizations, and grants, have kept the displays lit for thousands to enjoy.

To mark this special anniversary year, the Chamber is awarding prizes to the "People's Choice" winners of Best Lighted Residence, and Best Business. Drop your votes into containers in downtown businesses. Winners of the $50 prizes will be announced Dec. 15.

Friday, Dec. 2, several Traer businesses will have treats for you, along with special sale offers and open houses. Sign up for drawings, and participate in a special raffle to benefit Taylor Park Lighting.

At 6:30 p.m. Friday night, you can view the Lighted Parade on Second Street, or participate in the parade, with prizes going to first and second place. Santa will arrive, and visit with children at the Traer Historical Museum, where refreshments will be provided. From 6 to 8 p.m. Ron Dillavou will be doing ice carving near the Winding Stairs.

At the Traer Library at 6:30, there will be a holiday concert featuring the Union Carolers. Weather permitting they will perform on the balcony outside.

You can stop in Friday evening before the movie at the Traer Theatre for free popcorn.

Also on Friday evening, the "Traer Trolley" will provide free rides through the park and downtown from 7 to 8:30 p.m. After the parade, NT Basic will provide chili and ice cream at the former Boldt Auction Building on Second Street.

On Saturday, don't forget those open house sales specials at Traer businesses. The day's special events include the Traer Craft and Gift Show and the Traer Lions Soup Day being held at the Traer Memorial Building. The Craft Show begins at 9, and the Lions will be serving food beginning at 10:30.

Also on Saturday, the kids can visit with Santa from 11:30 to 12:30 at the Lions Club Park on Second Street, and there is a free kids' movie at the Traer Theatre.

Please pick up brochures in downtown businesses which outline all the open house information.
