Alex Thomas Nickel was born on February 10, 1990, in Edina, Minnesota, the son of Jeffrey and Tracy (Weida) Nickel. Alex grew up in Traer and graduated from North Tama High School in 2009. He then received a Criminal Justice degree from William Penn. Alex worked as a youth counselor for the Clarinda Academy in Clarinda, Iowa, and recently started working as a social worker for Lutheran Services of Iowa in Waterloo. He enjoyed football, hanging out at the pond, his two pits bulls, Kamara and Rocky, and spending time with his family and friends. Alex died at the age of 26 on Monday, January 23, 2017, at his home in Traer. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Janis Breakenridge. Alex is survived by his parents, Jeffrey and Tracy Nickel of Traer; a sister, Jessica Nickel of Southgate, Michigan; a brother, Zachary Nickel of Waterloo; paternal grandfather, Harold (Pat) Nickel of Cedar Falls; maternal grandmother, Marilyn (Jerry) Hulme of Traer; maternal grandfather, Tom (Cindy) Weida of Traer; three uncles, Scott Nickel of Richfield, Minnesota, Mike Nickel of Pardeeville, Wisconsin, and Jason Weida of Traer; and two aunts, Brandy Cooper and Misty Weida both of Traer. Alex will always be remembered for his laugh and his huge heart, and will be missed by all who knew him.
