Saturday Evening Arts presents Keyboard Music of J. S. Bach to be held at Hope United Methodist Church, 2203 South 3rd Ave., Marshalltown, Iowa on Saturday March 11, at 7:00 p. m. Pianist, John Devlin will perform the first Partita, the Italian Concerto, three contrapuntal pieces and, on the organ, the Prelude and Fugue in C Major, BWV 545.
Devlin completed his undergraduate studies in piano performance and music education at the Universities of Denver and Wyoming, then completed his MA in piano performance at the University of Iowa. His teachers included Irene Mundell, Judith St.John, Wilhelm Swartzoff, Alan Willman, William Doppmann, and William Avery. He studied organ with Arthur Birkby and Carl Gravender. Prior to retirement he taught instrumental music for 37 years at LDF and East Marshall and is a life member of NEA. He is also an active potter, having done shows across the country and currently has work at Art and Frame on Main in Marshalltown, the Octagon in Ames, and !st Avenue Collective in Winterset. He is an active piano teacher in Le Grand and is a member of the Ames MTNA chapter. He has been organist/pianist at Hope UMC for many years and is a member of the Des Moines AGO. He has assisted Mary Giese in producing six Bach-In-A-Day events in Marshalltown. He and his wife Carole live in Le Grand and have three daughters and four grandsons.
There will be a dessert reception following the program. The program is free. Offerings received will help with expenses. The Saturday Arts Series is sponsored by Hope UM Church.
