McWhirter to speak at Traer Memorial Day Service

The speaker for the annual Memorial Day Service at the Traer Memorial Building will be Maurice (Moe) McWhirter. The program will begin at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, May 28, 2017.

CAPT Maurice (Moe) McWhirter, USN (Ret.), is a graduate of North Tama High, Harvard College, and the University of Iowa Law School. A Regular and Reservist, he started out as a Judge Advocate doing courts-martial, and ended up as Chief of Staff for Joint Task Force Six. Recalled to active duty four times, he worked as an Intelligence Officer for SEALs at Naval Special Warfare Unit ONE, Chief of Targeting (Joint Intelligence Center) at Strategic Command, and Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) agent on Diego Garcia after 9/11. Commanding Officer of two commands, and Executive Officer of three, he learned to pilot ships, jump out of perfectly good airplanes and helicopters, fire various weapons (MP-5s to 16"/50 caliber Mark 7 naval guns), and was in several combat zones (Kuwait, Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq) and numerous other countries over his 30 years in the Navy. As a civilian, he is a retired Administrative Law Judge, and a Registered Nurse.

The Traer American Legion will be completing their annual visits to local cemeteries this year on Sunday, May 28, 2017. The schedule is as follows:

8:15 a.m. Meet at Memorial Building; 8:45 a.m. West Union Cemetery; 9 a.m. Saint Paul's; Breakfast Break; 10 a.m. Blessing Cemetery; 10:30 a.m. Geneseo Cemetery; 10:40 a.m. Spence Cemetery; 11:15 a.m. Memorial Building (for speaker); Buckingham Cemetery following the Memorial Service.

There will be a Memorial Service for all veterans lost at sea after the visit to Buckingham Cemetery at the Mill Street Bridge.

Flags and poppies will be placed on St. Paul's Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 25 at 1 p.m. and Buckingham Cemetery at 4 p.m.
