LeRoy S. Whannel, 103

LeRoy Scott Whannel was born on April 2, 1914, the son of Fred and Blanche (Scott) Whannel. LeRoy graduated from high school in Algonac, Michigan. He put himself through college by working as a Merchant Marine on the Great Lakes and received a degree from Detroit Business School. On November 9, 1940, LeRoy was united in marriage to Beulah "Boots" Buis in Traer. The couple made their home in Traer. In 1941, LeRoy purchased Buis Hardware from his father-in-law. After Pearl Harbor, LeRoy was called to the Navy and served in three invasions, including D-Day at Normandy. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, LeRoy returned to Traer and purchased Buis Hardware back, and renamed it Whannel's Hardware. In 1979, he sold the hardware store to his son, Jay, but continued working until May of this year. LeRoy was a member of the Traer United Presbyterian Church, Traer American Legion, the School Board, Chamber of Commerce, the Lion's Club, and was a volunteer fireman. He enjoyed boating, playing tennis, and watching his family's sporting events. LeRoy died at the age of 103 on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a brother, Leiland. LeRoy is survived by a daughter, Lynne Rusley of Cincinnati, Ohio; three sons, Stuart (Von Stachon) Whannel of San Jose, California, Jay (Marie "Toni") Whannel of Traer, and Gene (Lisa) Whannel of Estes Park, Colorado; five grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren.
