Letter to the Editor: Relay for Life

June 23, 2017
Kim Miller - American Cancer Society , Traer Star-Clipper

To the Editor:

As the staff partner to the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Tama County, I would like to thank the Dysart Community for their generosity and support. The City and its residents welcomed the event with open arms and hands on June 3rd. So many areas of the community came to help set-up, support the event and clean-up. I have been working with Relay For Life events for over 10 years and the Dysart Community stands out as one that truly made the Relay For Life a "Community Event".

So many groups from Dysart assisted the volunteers, that I know I will miss someone. A few that stand out were the City of Dysart for allowing us to use the park and other supplies, The Fire Department for helping set-up and clean-up, Dysart Lions for running the Concession stand, the Dysart Development Corporation for logistical supplies and the community as a whole for volunteering during the event.

I would also like to thank The Relay For Life Volunteer Leadership Team, Team Captains, and sponsors from across the county who worked to make this year's event a success.

This year, 15 teams participated in the Relay For Life event and raised over $33,000 to support the American Cancer Society's mission of saving lives from cancer. We were proud to welcome around 40 cancer survivors, who walked the opening lap and inspired everyone at Relay. Our Luminaria Ceremony was an opportunity to reflect and remember those who are no longer with us. Tama County should be proud of the accomplishment and support they are giving to those on a cancer journey.

Sincerely,

Kim Miller
