Cornfields, Common Sense & Community

June 23, 2017
Jeff Edler - IA State Senator (District 36) , Traer Star-Clipper

The legislative session adjourned a little over a month ago. While it was the first session of my term as your state senator, it was a big one for our constituents and Iowans across the state who wanted to see results.

I ran for office because I wanted to fix things, and not play politics or chase empty rhetoric. My focus is solely on results. I have always worked hard to communicate and provide information to you, and give you a straight-forward answer. Our focus these last few months has continually been economic growth and improving career opportunities for Iowans as well as ensuring our government operates within its budgetary means.

We worked to pass several of the priorities we set out the first week of session, including requiring jobs impact statements for administrative rule changes, and legislation to help our job creators. We made a series of changes to regulations in this state with the goal of allowing job creators to focus on expanding their businesses in our communities.

This year we passed timely supplemental state aid for our schools, setting budgets early and allowing school districts more time and predictability to plan their school year budgets. In this budget, we passed an increase we knew we could fully fund, instead of following the previous trend of overpromising and under-delivering. We also passed a number of bills to expand local control to school boards, cutting many of the strings that restricted the ways schools can spend state resources, giving our local schools more flexibility.

This session was a productive one for the people of Iowa. I appreciate all the emails, phone calls and messages this session. In the coming months, please continue to contact me with your questions and concerns. It is an honor to serve you as your state senator.

In closing I would like to leave you with this statement. As a father, husband, and everyday working Iowan, I am not interested in hyperbole and finger pointing. As earlier stated, I was elected to get results. I will continue working in the interim to solve challenges that affect our district and our state. One of my personal goals while running for office was to show people anyone can make a change. Hard work and determination will endure.
