Letter to the Editor: TMU Reliability and Community Support

October 20, 2017
James Owens - Traer, Iowa , Traer Star-Clipper

Traer is envied by a lot of communities that don't have a municipal utility. Why is that? Reliable electric service. Financial support, participation and leadership.

Just look back and remember these three weather events.

The ice storm in 2007. Customers of TMU had power restored through the local generation facilities within a couple hours. TMU maintained local generation for 8 days before regular power was restored to Traer and surrounding towns. During this time people from other towns came to Traer to buy essentials such as groceries and gasoline and propane.

The straight line wind storm (derecho) in June 2012. Power was restored in less than 2 hours to the system and damaged parts of the system were repaired with power restored within 2 days.

The EF2 tornado in June 2014. Power was restored to all but a few heavily damaged homes by the end of the day.

TMU and its forward thinking board have been a financial supporter, participant and leader in community development and betterment. Again, remember how this has benefited Traer. Look at the downtown sidewalk and lighting improvements. Help with the major Library renovation, along with the Traer Theatre. TMU has participated in development of new housing, Pied Piper Daycare, NT Activity Center and energy efficient lighting at North Tama Community School.

It makes sense to continue these investments in our community. Please vote YES on November 7 and support local ownership of the gas franchise in Traer.
