Letter to the Editor: YES vote is a good call

October 27, 2017
Jo Ann Bitcon - Traer, Iowa , Traer Star-Clipper

A YES vote on November 7th for local ownership and operation of a natural gas utility franchise is a vote for Traer's future!

While attending the town hall meeting on October 4th, I found answers to many of the questions I had concerning this issue. How would this benefit Traer's citizens? How would areas of concern be addressed - like safety, employee training, equipment, maintaining the gas lines and our gas bills?

DOT safety standards are the same whether the employees work for Alliant or Traer. TMU is currently a member of IAMU, a state association that offers nationally-recognized training for owning and operating gas and electric utilities, as well as PHMSA, a pipeline and hazardous materials safety association that inspects pipes annually regardless of ownership.

This information satisfied my curiosity concerning the technical facts of operating their own gas utility - and the fact that Traer would be very capable of operating a gas utility just as successfully as the city runs the electric utility (TMU).

If Traer has ownership of its natural gas operation, just think how this could have an impact on Traer and its citizens! Follow the money trail. Let's keep the money in Traer versus having investor ownership where profits leave town.

Traer has a proven record with the ability to provide "top notch" successful services to the citizens of Traer like the Traer Fire Department, Traer Ambulance Service and Traer Municipal Utilities.

Why would Traer's ownership of a municipal natural gas utility be any different?
