Lyons presented with 2017 Friend of Science Award

November 3, 2017
Traer Star-Clipper

Brian Lyons, plant foreman of the Traer Municipal Utilities' water treatment plant and well house, as well as the wastewater treatment lagoons received a 2017 Friend of Science Award from the Iowa Science Teaching Section (ISTS) of the Iowa Academy of Science. As plant foreman, Brian gets to spend time with North Tama students teaching them about water processes. Mr. Lyons says that these are some of the most enjoyable days he has all year! Mr. Lyons loves to see the kids as they start to understand the long journey their drinking water takes. They learn about the Jordan aquifer from which the raw water comes and follow it through the entire treatment process. The favorite experience for both the kids (and Brian) is the tour of the waste treatment lagoons. The students get to see the raw waste coming in and the clean water going out. Mr. Lyons adds, "I'm always amazed at the good questions the kids ask while at the lagoons, they are truly interested in the process. I truly look forward to the fifth graders' field trips!"

Presenting the award was Lisa Chizek, ISTS Chair and North Tama Elementary science teacher.

Congratulations, Brian, on your 2017 ISTS Friend of Science Award!
