One of three men originally wanted in a home repair scam has pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years in prison in Tama County District by Judge Ian K. Thornhill.

Shawn Corbett Bolduc Jr., 22, Bargersville, Ind., was sentenced and fined and assessed court costs totaling $1,038. The fine amount of $1,000 was suspended. The sentence is to be served concurrently with a sentence imposed in Poweshiek County. Bolduc pleaded guilty on Oct. 19.

A request to recover $24,040 of the amount involved has been filed by Tama County Attorney Brent Heeren. Bolduc was ordered to pay victim restitution as part of the sentence.

Bolduc was accused of charging "colossal fees" to repair the rural Traer home of a woman who told Tama County Deputy Sheriff Wes Sebetka "she believed she had been swindled."

According to the criminal complaint, Bolduc, who claimed he was representing a firm called American Construction, Indianapolis, Ind., had been contacted by the woman to repair leaks in her roof.

The complaint says the woman thought the fees charged were very high but she was unknowledgeable on repair charges and her husband had died so she "felt pressured into paying the demanding sums totaling $58,000." Bolduc had been able to cash checks totaling $34,000 of the amount before an additional check had been refused by the bank.

He had requested the checks be made out in separate increments.

A contact made by Sebetka with the owner of American Construction revealed Bolduc had never been employed by the company.

In Poweshiek County, Bolduc was sentenced on a 2nd degree theft charge. It resulted from him charging an elderly man $14,400 for "placing a piece of tin over part of a chimney after contacting the man and convincing him to let him fix the chimney. He was sentenced to five years in prison and fined $750 and ordered to make restitution.
