A brand new Traer Municipal Pool is expected to open its doors next month just in time for Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer break.

The new pool, located on Linn Street, replaces the old pool used by Traer residents for the past 35 years. In addition to keeping old amenities from the previous pool, the new $3.2 million pool will feature a zero-depth entry, a brand new water slide, new bathhouse, new pumps and filters, ADA accesible, and aquatic toys for children.

"We are very excited to see this pool open in time for the summer," City Councilman Josh Youel said. "This will be a place families will spend a lot of their days at and enjoy themselves."

According to City Clerk Jon Panfil, previous attempts to fundraise all funds for a new pool had been unsuccesful, including an attempt to do so by a former city councilman four years ago.

"The old pool was just in terrible shape," Panfil said. "It was cracking and falling apart. It probably could have limped along another few years. I feel it was well known in town that we were going to need to do something."

As Youel came on the City Council several years ago, he revived the idea of a new municpal pool and proposed a bond issue to pay for a majority of the project with the rest the money fundraised. A $2.5 million bond was passed last year with 86 percent voting yes and an additional $700,000 fundraised to meet the goal.

"We feel very confident going forward that there won't be any issues," Youel said. "We have left a small cushion for ourselves, but we are at the point that any problems should have already happened by now."

The City of Traer on Monday also approved True Builders of Traer to work on the new parking lot for $50,000, with $32,800 fundraised currently. The general contractor for the pool project is Garling Construction of Belle Plaine and the pool contractor is Ricioch
