Traer residents eager to enjoy homemade ice cream over this summer will now have a place in town to enjoy in Sweets on Main, opening Sunday, May 26 on 2nd Street.

Sweets on Main is the brainchild of Pam Douglas, a retired nurse looking to create a fresh new business. Originally a photography studio before and also once a piano store, the Douglas family bought the building and installed all the equipment necessary for an ice cream parlor. They also renovated the building to accommodate their needs and liven the interior. Along with her husband Mark, son Brad and other members of the family and friends, Sweets on Main slowly became a reality.

"We bought the building a year and half ago and we really didn't start working until March," Douglas said. "We basically gutted everything, put in new walls, stripped the floor to the original wood and the originally ceiling. The kitchen and office were placed in the back. We did lots of paint and a lot of hard work."

In addition to fifteen flavors of homemade ice cream, shakes, malts, sundaes and "Traer Tornadoes", Sweets on Main will also serve breakfast in their location. Mainly family and friends will work with Douglas as they establish their business and move forward with the menu.

"My goal is that Sweets on Main is a productive, family-friendly place people feel they can come sit down for ice cream or breakfast," Douglas said. "I want this to be a place families want to come to and feel at home."

Sweets on Main is currently planned to be closed on Tuesday, and open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays for ice cream and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. over the weekends. Douglas is currently evaluating hours for breakfast based off demand. The grand opening will take place at 11 a.m. on May 26 to basically introduce the public to Sweets on Main.
