For those who serve

August 20, 2018
Traer Star-Clipper

Current military members from the Traer area may be a long ways from home, but each will be recognized for their service to our country through a sign at the Traer Memorial Building listing these men and women.

Daun Kennedy of Traer was inspired to have such a sign created for Traer servicemen and women when she saw one in Conrad several years ago. "Our Men and Women currently Serving" will consist of a metal sign about 5'x6' and list each person currently serving a branch of the military who are North Tama graduates, including her own son Cory. Each person consists of a tile that has their name, their enlistment date and branch of service. The sign will hang inside the Memorial Building before entering the main hall.

"I run a project called the 'Hometown Hearts', where we sent care packages to people currently in the military, so this is an extension of my work," Kennedy said. "Through Hometown Hearts, I've received enough donations that we can fund the sign. I'm very passionate about this and want to acknowledge those currently serving in the military."

The sign and tiles cost approximately $1,500. Donations came from various community members supporting the military as Kennedy found herself without any other projects recently. Within three weeks, the money was raised and will be installed by Nagle Signs of Waterloo. The sign is interchangeable and tiles can be removed after they leave the service for them to keep. According to Kennedy, 45 names can be on the sign at any time. Names were gathered via social media and directly from families with members currently serving, much like Kennedy's family.

"I was in the National Guard and am supportive of the military," Kennedy said. "Having my own son in National Guard also puts it close to home. The response and support has been tremendous."
