Ethan Deegan, a senior at North Tama High School, has enlisted in the U.S Navy and plans to graduate from school early in January of 2019 to attend naval basic training thereafter.

Deegan will be studying in a submarine technical field while with the Navy as he hopes to also enroll at Iowa State University to study electrical engineering. His decision also ties into family who have served in the military.

"I've had a long line of family that have been in the Navy, like my great-grandpa, great uncle, my grandfather and dad want to but for medical reasons couldn't," Deegan said. "It's a great opportunity to get a jumpstart on my electrical engineering through the GI Bill. I've seen a lot of commercials about veterans and people in our community and I want to do my part to defend the country and the Constitution.

The senior drove to Cedar Rapids to discuss joining the Navy in their office and received a home visit in June to sign papers to join the branch after deciding this path was for him. Deegan will be going to Great Lakes, Ill. for basic training for eight weeks before heading east to Connecticut for a submarine/electrical school.

"There are four possible routes I can take; radio, sonar, fire-control and electrical technician," Deegan said. "You can request one route, but it can be a shot in the dark. I was nervous being sworn in and I've seen YouTube videos of what I'll be doing in training. I feel ready to go."

Deegan is the son of Jeremy and Melissa Deegan of Traer. During his time at North Tama High School, he has been involved in football, speech, track and looks forward to returning for prom and the Class of 2019 Commencement.
