Three North Tama teachers attended the the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) National Conference in St. Louis, MO from April 11-14, where they had the opportunity to make professional connections and learn from keynote speakers.

Attending this year were Lisa Chizek, Vonna Watson, and Brenda Kaufmann. Chizek has been attending the conference for about eight years while the two other North Tama instructors have been joining for the last three years as a learning and presenting oppurtunity.

"It is a conference that inspires teachers," Chizek said. "Teachers can make connections with other educators at the conference. The sessions give you ideas to take back and use in your own classroom. Teachers also have an opportunity to present sessions to teach others how to implement lessons in their classrooms."

During their time at the conference, the teachers helped Dr. Beth Van Meeteren of the University of Northern Iowa teach a short course on "integrating Ramps with literacy" and also did different activites during a two-hour "Elementary Extravaganza" where other elementary teachers "could walk through and talk to everyone to gather ideas for their classrooms" according to Chizek. North Tama's own STEM instructor also is a state science leader for the state at NSTA and is on the Committee for Preschool and Elementary Science Teaching.

"North Tama is a strong leader for elementary and early childhood science and STEM," Chizek said. "Students in other schools are not as lucky and don't have strong science and STEM programs available for them. So, our teachers have the opportunity to share what they do to teach others how to implement these essential classes daily. We share state-wide and nationally."

North Tama recently held their annual STEM Expert Day and Elementary STEM Fair at the school.
