North Tama boys basketball took to the road this weekend after a home win over Colo-Nesco to take a step back in a 65-30 loss at BCLUW on Saturday, Dec. 14.

The Redhawks delivered the first punch of the game as Tate Payne got going early from beyond the arc, yet the Comets would string together a 15-3 run to lead 15-7 after on quarter. BCLUW would double its score and hold all but Payne in check the rest of the quarter to go up 30-18, half of those points coming from the senior's shooting.

"We've had some really good games against [BCLUW] the last few years, but not tonight," coach Alex Tagtow. "They were just tougher than us, simple as that. They played hard for 32 minutes and we did not."

The hosts continue to ride the momentum as they hit shot after shot while forcing turnovers on the Redhawks every other trip. Effort came up short as the Comets also controlled the glass for extra scoring opportunities and to draw fouls off the Redhawks. North Tama would finish 65-30 with Payne scoring 12 points off threes along with three rebounds. Luke Pennell finished with eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Devin McKinley had four points and four rebounds, Ryan McLean two points and 14 rebounds.

"We by no means shot it well tonight," Tagtow said. "We shot 25 percent. Five for 25. When your opponent is tougher than you, they are better. If we continue this, scores like this will happen a lot this season."

North Tama travelled to GMG on Tuesday, Dec. 17 and Riceville on Friday, Dec. 20 for the final games before Christmas break. The Redhawks are 2-3 on the season. Photos from the game can be found at
