North Tama girls basketball was on lockdown mode on Thursday, Jan. 23 as they held Valley Lutheran scoreless in the first half and rode their defense to a 59-9 win over the Crusaders.

"It was good to be able to get the young players in tonight and everyone played well," coach Shawn Larmore said. "Hopefully we can take some confidence from this game going forward."

The Redhawks caused havoc for the visiting Crusaders, forcing multiple turnovers in the first quarter and cashing them in for easy layups. Even as Valley Lutheran managed to get in their offense, the North Tama defense held them scoreless while their own offense hummed to a 45-0 run by halftime.

Katie Kopriva finished with five points, three assists and seven steals in North Tama's lockdown win over Valley Lutheran on Thursday, Jan. 23.

With a lead well in place, Larmore cleared the bench and gave valuable minutes to the younger players. While the Redhawks were able to get the lead up to 50, the offense slowed down to 14 points in the second half in the dominant win. North Tama had 22 steals in their third win of the season.

"We're still not knocking down free throws like we need in competitive ball games," Larmore said. "Our ball movement has been consistent, but missing layups needs to improve. Making those bunnies will keep us in games we've been beaten by 20 points in."

Abby DeBoef finished 14 points and seven rebounds, Rylee McLean 10 points and two rebounds. Aubree Monat, Katelyn Kucera and Symphony McDowell each finished with six points. Takoa Kopriva made her return to the lineup with five points and a steal.

"Takoa needs to get some confidence and reps on the court," Larmore said. "We'll need her shooting down the stretch. We're missing her penetrating ability in our guards. Katelyn [Kucera] is building confidence in her shooting with each game. Abby and Rylee both played well tonight again."

The Redhawks hosted Collins Maxwell the next day and traveled to Colo-Nesco on Tuesday, Jan. 28. North Tama will face GMG in Traer on Thursday, Jan. 30 and Gladbrook Reinbeck on Saturday, Feb. 1 for Senior Night. The girls are 3-11 on the season.
